CREATING YOUR AD

Placing an Ad

There are four quick steps to creating your ad:

  • Step 1: Enter your ad information.
  • Step 2: Upload your photos.
  • Step 3: Review your ad.
  • Step 4: Purchase your ad.

Information Required to Place an Ad:

See the ad checklist below. Some items depend on the ad you select.

  • 1.) Basic information about your car, including year, make, model, body style, mileage and price.
  • 2.) A list of optional and standard equipment.
  • 3.) The best-selling points about your car, so you can create a detailed description. The more info you provide, the easier it is to reach buyers looking for those features.
  • 4.) Photos of your car. You may add a single photo or up to 12 photos (depending on the package you select).
  • 5.) Your Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or PayPal account. To protect the information you provide, our site is on a secure server.

Please note: Regarding the VIN, including it in your ad is optional, but it may increase your ad's exposure with search results.

Basic Automotive Info and Terms

Alloy Wheels

Wheels made of a mixture of two or more elements, especially where one is aluminum.

Body Style

One of the primary means of identifying a vehicle, based on characteristics like size, shape, and number of doors.

CD Player vs. CD Changer

A CD player holds only the CD currently being played. Compact discs must be changed one at a time by hand.

A CD changer holds multiple CDs in addition to the one currently being played. The discs can be interchanged and played with the push of a button.

5-Door vs. 4-Door

5-door refers to a vehicle that has a functional fifth door. Also known as a hatchback. 4-door refers to a conventional configuration of front and rear doors on both sides of the vehicle.

Engine Type

Refers to several variables, including how many cylinders (3, 4, 6, 8, etc.) it has, whether it's a rotary engine, and whether it's a hybrid.

Make

Refers to the name of the company that built the car. Chevrolet, Ford, Volvo, and Nissan are a few examples.

Model

The name of the car. For example, Malibu, Focus, S80 and Altima.

Options

Vehicle options are features that are available in addition to the base model. They typically increase the price when the vehicle is new, but they also afford a higher resale value in the future.

Examples of options include, but are not limited to, heated seats, satellite radio, upgraded stereo system, power mirrors, power sunroof, and navigation system.

Radio vs. Stereo

Radio refers to the signal receiver in the vehicle, typically AM/FM. Stereo refers to the entire sound system in the car, including receiver, speakers, and all related sound enhancement components.

Specialty Cars

A category of cars including: Aston Martin, Avanti, Bentley, Bugatti, Excalibur, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, McLaren, Maserati, Panoz, Rolls Royce, Shelby, TVR, Vector, and Venturi

Transmission

Refers to the mechanism that changes gears as the vehicle accelerates and decelerates. There are two types: manual and automatic.

A manual transmission is one in which gears are selected by the driver by means of a hand-operated gearshift and a foot-operated clutch. Also called a "standard transmission."

An automatic transmission is one in which the gears are shifted automatically by the vehicle and controlled by a torque converter. The torque converter replaces the clutch. These transmissions come in 3-, 4- and 5-speed. The more gears involved, the smoother the acceleration.

Trim

Trim levels are groupings of both exterior and interior equipment packages on a specific model (e.g., Ford Mustang GT, Honda Accord EX). Trim levels can increase the value and functionality of a vehicle, as well as improve its appearance. These options may include: upgraded wheels, leather upholstery, engine performance packages, safety features, and comfort/power features.

VIN

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character sequence of numbers and letters assigned to each car by the manufacturer when the car is built. This number is stamped into the car in several places. Each car manufactured after 1980 has a unique VIN.

In addition to being printed on your insurance and vehicle registration cards, the VIN can usually be found on the driver's side of the dashboard by the window, or on the driver's side doorjamb.

Please note: A VIN must contain exactly 17 characters. It should not have spaces or the letters I, O or Q. Please double-check your data before you submit it.

Year

Also called "model year." A new model year starts after the summer break of the car production plant, during which the assembly lines are altered to accommodate the changes introduced in the cars of the next model year. A model year and year of manufacture can, therefore, differ.

Choosing the Right Ad to Sell Your Car

Answering a couple of questions will help you choose your ad: How long do you want your ad to run?

Is it important that your car stand out from other listings for a faster sale? If so, you may want to consider an ad with premier features such as a home page featured ad.

Making Your Ad Stand Out

To help your vehicle get noticed for a faster sale, you may want to consider selecting the 4-week Super Special option, where your ad will be featured on the home page and rotated on top of the applicable search pages.

Unique Description

Make sure your vehicle stands out from the crowd by the way you describe its appearance, performance, and features. You have up to 1,000 characters to talk about your car. We recommend that you take advantage of that and put in as much information as you can.

Up to 12 Online Photos

A photo of your car lets buyers see exactly what you're selling. Ads with photos typically get twice the response of ads without. When potential buyers click on the image, they can see an enlarged photo of your car for a better view. You may add a single photo or up to 12 photos (depending on the package you select).

Featured Listing

Listings that appear first -- above Standard Listings. They're the largest listings with the biggest thumbnail photos and the maximum vehicle details, descriptions and seller information.

Thumbnail Photo

This small online photo draws attention to your ad in shoppers' Search Results Listing -- buyers see your car before they select your ad.
